This session provided a platform for Healthy Neighborhoods partners to engage in purposeful and meaningful sharing, learning, and brainstorming related to peacemaking. Peacemaking is a traditional Native American approach to achieve community-based restorative justice. The approach differs from other legal processes—rather than assigning “right” and “wrong,” it strives for consensus. Participants learned about the successful implementation of Peacemaking in the Near Westside neighborhood in Syracuse, which has struggled with high crime rates, and gained new insights from the perspectives of a Peacemaking Circle leader and community resident whose lives have been transformed by the process.
